Celebrating 45 Years of Service: A Legacy of Impact at Cloverleaf

Dear Friends,
This year marks a remarkable milestone for Cloverleaf Equine Center—our 45th anniversary. As we reflect on nearly half a century of service, transformation, and community, we are honored to share the story of a family whose journey embodies everything Cloverleaf stands for: growth, resilience, and a lifelong bond.
The Messersmith family first walked through our barn doors in 1987. Michael, then just shy of six years old, began therapeutic riding with us. At that time, the organization was part of Fairfax County 4H. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and propionic acidemia, Michael faced many physical challenges—but here, atop a big, gentle horse named “Dude,” he found his freedom.
“Michael just loved [riding] because it was his thing,” remembers his mother, Stephanie. “His brother had baseball… and for Michael this was his thing.” Week after week, season after season, Michael grew stronger—physically and emotionally. “Eventually he started sitting up straighter and straighter… by the time he was 10, he only had one side walker for a little while and then could ride fairly independently.”
Stephanie credits the horses and the program with helping Michael achieve things that once seemed impossible: “He could stand alone and cruise around furniture without assistance… We credit Cloverleaf with helping him become very independent.”
Michael rode at Cloverleaf for 14 years. He passed away at the age of 20, having defied medical expectations. His impact, however, continues to resonate far beyond his time in the saddle. His father, Roger, knew even then that his connection to Cloverleaf wouldn’t end: “From the time after Michael died, I knew I was going to come and volunteer when I retired.” Three years ago, he fulfilled that vow—and he’s been a dedicated volunteer ever since.
Roger’s service, like Michael’s ride, is deeply meaningful. “It’s so cool… watching the clients advance through the program,” he says. “It’s an amazing environment where you’re seeing and enabling achievements for people—and that’s incredibly satisfying personally.”
Today, the Messersmiths’ granddaughter attends summer camp at Cloverleaf. Their family’s story—spanning nearly four decades—reminds us how one life touched by our mission can create ripples across generations.
Cloverleaf is more than just a place. It’s a promise to families, past and present, that their children will be seen, supported, and empowered.
That promise is made possible by donors like you.
Now, more than ever, your support is crucial. In this time of economic uncertainty, nonprofits like Cloverleaf are facing mounting challenges to sustain critical programming.
A mid-year gift ensures we can continue to provide transformative services to hundreds of individuals with disabilities, their families, and others in need.
Please make a gift today—whether it’s $45 to honor 45 years of service, or another amount that’s meaningful to you. Your generosity will help us write the next chapter of stories like Michael’s.
“You’re missing out if you don’t take advantage of Cloverleaf,” Stephanie told us. “It helps physically, emotionally… It gives kids like Michael a safe place and something that they can do that’s special to them.”
Let’s make sure more children, teens, and adults discover that special place.
With heartfelt gratitude,

Kelsey Gallagher
